Your family’s AI privacy settings, in one place

Most AI apps can learn from what you type unless you tell them not to. Here is where that switch lives in the tools families use most. Print it, sit down together, and work through it one app at a time.

Your family’s AI privacy settings

Apps move their settings around. Each tool shows the date we last checked it, and its full review has the details and the official links.

  1. ChatGPT

Learns from what you type? Yes, unless you switch it off.

Where the switch is: Model training: open Settings > Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. That setting also covers Codex tasks on a personal plan. Use Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation in history. More in the full review.

  2. Google Gemini

Learns from what you type? Yes, unless you switch it off.

Where the switch is: Go to myactivity.google.com → Gemini Apps Activity → toggle off. Note: turning this off stops saving new activity but does not delete existing data — you need to delete that separately.

  3. Meta AI

Learns from what you type? Yes, and there is no switch to turn it off.

What you can do: There is no universal one-click switch that turns off Meta AI training or fully walls off the personal-agent idea. Treat these as harm-reduction steps, not a full off-switch. More in the full review.

  4. Microsoft Copilot

Learns from what you type? Yes, unless you switch it off.

Where the switch is: For Microsoft 365 Copilot/organizational accounts, prompts and Graph data are not used to train foundation models by default. For consumer Copilot, use Copilot privacy settings and the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard to manage model-training/data controls where available; delete or export data separately from the dashboard.

  5. Claude

Learns from what you type? Yes, unless you switch it off.

Where the switch is: Model improvement: Settings → Privacy → turn off Help Improve our AI models. If it is already off, leave it off. Use Incognito chats for anything you would not want in a training pipeline; Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used for model improvement even if Model Improvement is enabled. Avoid thumbs-up/down feedback on sensitive conversations, because feedback can store the related conversation for up to five years. More in the full review.

  6. Apple Intelligence

Learns from what you type? No.

What you can do: See what left the device: Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Intelligence Report → choose the last 15 minutes or 7 days → Export Activity. Open Apple_Intelligence_Report.json if you want to see Private Cloud Compute and ChatGPT extension requests. The report can be empty if there have not been any recent off-device requests. 7. Grok

Learns from what you type? Yes, unless you switch it off.

Where the switch is: On X: Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → 'Grok & third-party collaborators' → turn off the option allowing your posts and interactions to be used for training. Also turn off conversation training inside Grok's own settings. For sensitive prompts, use Grok's Private Chat mode.

  8. Perplexity AI

Learns from what you type? Yes, unless you switch it off.

Where the switch is: Settings → AI Data Usage / AI Data Retention controls → turn off use of your data for AI model training. Enterprise data is excluded by default; API data follows the API privacy/security commitments. Use deletion/export/privacy requests for existing account data.
