Chatbot
Definition
Software you interact with through a conversation-style interface: you type or speak, and it replies. Chatbots are not necessarily AI; older and simpler ones follow predefined rules, decision trees, or scripts. Modern chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok use large language models, which makes them much more flexible and capable than the rule-based website chat boxes that came before them.
Why It Matters
Don't let the word fool you. Modern chatbots are not the useless pop-up boxes from 2015. They are genuinely powerful tools wearing an old name.
What does that look like in practice?
You open ChatGPT, type 'explain compound interest like I'm new to it,' and it answers in a back-and-forth conversation.
What people actually mean when they say this
When someone dismisses 'chatbots' as useless, they're often picturing the clunky pop-up boxes from years ago, not today's tools built on large language models.
