Artifact (Claude)
Definition
In Claude, Anthropic’s chatbot, an Artifact is a substantial piece of work Claude builds in its own side panel instead of burying it in the scrolling chat. It might be a real document, checklist, diagram, simple webpage, or small interactive tool. You can edit it, step through versions, download it, and, if you choose, share or publish it with a link. Ordinary short replies stay in the chat; Artifacts are for the bigger thing you might want to keep using.
Why It Matters
Once you know the word, the side panel stops feeling like a mystery — and the privacy warning gets clearer: a public Artifact link is a public web page if that link gets out, not a private handoff like a locked family Google Doc.
What does that look like in practice?
You ask Claude for a one-page packing list for a week at your daughter’s house with a toddler and a dog — shoes, meds, the weird snack that prevents car meltdowns. Claude opens a side panel with a clean checklist you can tweak, download, or keep iterating. Handy. The part worth a second thought: if you create a public link and that URL lands on a forum, a forwarded email chain, or anywhere crawlers look, search engines can treat it like any other public page.
What people actually mean when they say this
When someone says “I made an Artifact in Claude,” they mean Claude put a standalone document or mini-app in that side workspace — not a museum piece, not a random file attachment, and not the whole chat transcript.
