“I read 'killing off' and pictured myself rebuilding a helper I barely set up.”
Gemini Gems become skills in November. You don't have to rebuild an instructions-only one
TechCrunch's headline said Google is killing off Gemini's Gems. You do not have to rebuild an instructions-only one. Google's help page, opened October 24, 2026, says it will turn your Gems into skills when Gems go away. On November 17, 2026, for adults 18 and over on a personal account, those Gems become read-only.
We read TechCrunch, the September 27 and September 30 9to5Google reports, and Google's help page, opened October 24, 2026.
A Gem is instructions you saved for Gemini, sometimes with a file. A skill is that helper, called from the chat box with a slash, soon an @ sign.
December 17, 2026 removes those Gems and untransferred files from adult personal accounts. Workspace business, enterprise, and non-profit accounts move in March 2027; education in June 2027. Under-18 personal accounts move later, with details to come.
This got loud because a calendar date plus "killing off" turns a planned move into a rebuild, and rebuilds travel whether or not the work is yours.
The notice is real, and flinching at a date is reasonable. It is not only a new name. Skills do not yet work with Canvas, Deep Research, most default tools, or sharing. Google lists those as coming, not here.
This is the situation as of October 24, 2026.
If your Gem is only instructions, Google will move it for you; check its replacement before relying on it. For an adult personal account, download wanted files before December 17, 2026, and check any features you rely on against Google's current skills limitations.
A planned move is not a Saturday rebuild.
In conversation:
It's a real move, Google says it will carry an instructions-only Gem, and a helper that uses files or special tools is a different check.
When someone sends you this:
I saw this too: the date is real, Google says it will move yours, and the check is whether yours is only instructions or whether it uses files or tools skills do not have yet.
Questions people ask
Do I have to learn the new symbol before November 17?
No. Google says it will turn your Gems into skills when they go away, and a personal Gem for an adult 18 or over can still be used until November 17. After that it is read-only until December 17, when it is removed, and the page says you will see a slash, soon an @ sign, in the box.
What if I use Gemini at work, at school, or I am under 18?
Google's help page puts Workspace business, enterprise, and non-profit accounts in March 2027, and education accounts in June 2027, not this November. If you are under 18 on a personal account, it says your Gems move later and details are still to come. The November 17 and December 17 dates are for a personal account, adults 18 and over.
