You shouldn't have to learn Spark vs Chat vs Cowork to send an email
You should be able to say what you need — draft this email, check my calendar, find the school newsletter — and let the app figure out the rest. The standard Gemini interface still gives eligible users separate places for Chat, Spark, and Daily Brief. Gemini Live can now route a request to Spark automatically, but outside that experience — and in competing assistants — users may still have to choose among branded modes.
Google even wrote the honest sentence itself: "You shouldn't have to guess whether a task requires Spark, a Daily Brief, or a quick inbox search." Then the Gemini app still offers chat, Spark, and Daily Brief as separate places in the navigation, each with its own icon. That is the whole problem in one screenshot.
Perez's complaint is not that the features are fake. Spark can run longer jobs across Docs, Sheets, Drive, and the web. Daily Brief can pull a morning snapshot from Gmail and Calendar. Chat still answers a question. The issue is that ordinary people are being asked to learn Google's internal org chart before they can ask for help.
Daily Brief is the example that fails the 56-year-old test fastest. Perez describes it resurfacing old Google searches, such as college scholarships and animal rescues, as if yesterday's curiosity were today's to-do. That is not a briefing. That is the app tapping you on the shoulder about a thought you already finished.
Claude has been doing a version of the same split: Chat versus Cowork. On August 25, 2026, Anthropic added shared memory between Chat and cloud-based Cowork sessions. Cowork sessions running locally on a computer still do not use that memory, and Chat and Cowork remain separate experiences.
ChatGPT asks you to toggle Chat and Work. OpenAI's own help page is plain about it: Chat is for everyday questions; Work is for longer, multi-step jobs and finished files. Codex is a third door if you write software. None of that is evil. It is still homework the company should be doing, not you.
One honest reaction: this is clever product architecture dressed up as user choice. I am not sure it is kind.

Where this lands in real life: The next time you sit down to email the PTA that you cannot bring Friday's cupcakes, you should not have to decide whether that is a Chat, a Spark, a Cowork, or a Work. Type the job. If the picker is still in the way, stay in Chat and say the outcome in one sentence.
If an assistant needs a glossary before it will send an email, the glossary is the bug.
The next time you need to email the PTA that you cannot bring Friday's cupcakes, stay in the ordinary chat box and say the outcome in one sentence. If the app needs an agent, it can promote itself.

Should I just use Siri instead of learning all these AI mode names?
Maybe, if your task lives on your Apple device and Siri can actually do it. Apple's pitch is less homework: Siri, Spotlight, Photos, and the camera get smarter where you already are. If your calendar and mail live in Google, Gemini may still be the better tool once you ignore the labels and state the job.
