Unsupervised Learning
Definition
A training method where the AI is given data without labels and left to find patterns on its own. Nobody tells it the right answer. Instead it groups, sorts, and spots structure that wasn't pointed out in advance. It's useful when you have a lot of data but no time, or no way, to label all of it.
Why It Matters
It's the counterpart to supervised learning. Together they explain most of how modern AI is taught, and why some systems can surprise even the people who built them.
What does that look like in practice?
Hand an AI a pile of customer records with no labels and let it group similar shoppers together. That's unsupervised learning.
What people actually mean when they say this
When someone says the AI 'found patterns on its own,' they usually mean unsupervised learning, where nobody supplied the right answers.
