Dataset
Definition
A collection of information gathered together to train or test an AI system. It might be millions of photographs, a library of text, or a spreadsheet of past sales. The contents and quality of the dataset shape what the resulting AI can do, and what it gets wrong. Good data in tends to mean good results out. The reverse is also true.
Why It Matters
When an AI behaves oddly, the answer is often in the data it learned from. The dataset is where a lot of an AI's strengths and blind spots are decided.
What does that look like in practice?
To teach an AI to spot skin conditions, researchers feed it a dataset of thousands of labelled medical photos.
What people actually mean when they say this
When someone says 'it's only as good as its data,' they mean the dataset it learned from decided much of what it gets right and wrong.
