Narrow AI (Weak AI)
Definition
AI that's built to do one specific thing, even if it does that thing brilliantly. A chess program, a spam filter, a voice assistant: each is superb within its lane and useless outside it. Every AI tool in use today is narrow AI, including the impressive ones. The contrast is with general intelligence, which would handle anything. We're not there. "Weak" here means specialised, not feeble.
Why It Matters
It's a useful corrective to the hype. However clever a tool seems, it's still a specialist, and knowing that keeps your expectations accurate.
What does that look like in practice?
A brilliant chess engine that can't so much as set a timer is narrow AI: superb at one thing, helpless elsewhere.
What people actually mean when they say this
When someone says today's AI is 'still narrow,' they mean every tool is a specialist, however clever, and none is a true all-rounder.
