Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
Definition
A hypothetical AI with the broad adaptability and general problem-solving ability of a capable person, rather than a system that is impressive only within defined limits. Today’s general-purpose AI can work across text, images, audio, code, and data, but it still lacks the reliable real-world understanding and flexibility usually meant by AGI. AGI does not exist by any broadly accepted standard, and experts disagree about whether it is a few years away, much further off, or achievable at all.
Why It Matters
A great deal of money, hope, and worry is attached to this idea. Knowing it's still hypothetical lets you read the headlines with a clearer eye.
What does that look like in practice?
A single AI that could plan your taxes, diagnose a rattle in your car, and write a wedding speech equally well would be AGI, and none exists yet.

When a headline says 'AGI is coming,' it's describing a hypothetical general-purpose AI, not anything you can use today.
