Definition
An AI companion is a chatbot built — or sold — to feel like an ongoing personal relationship: a friend, partner, or character who remembers you and will still be there tomorrow. The conversation itself is the product, not a one-off answer. Apps such as Replika and Character.AI sit in this category: they keep a persistent persona, store details about your life, and are designed so you come back. General-purpose chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can be used the same way, but they were not built primarily as companions. Under the hood, it is still software predicting plausible words. It does not feel, attach, or care, even when the replies sound like someone who does.
Why It Matters
The phrase is showing up in app stores, headlines, and draft laws because these products sell closeness, not just answers — and closeness is easier to trust than it is to check.
What does that look like in practice?
Your neighbor says she has an “AI boyfriend.” She does not mean she asked ChatGPT to punch up a dating-app bio. She means she opened an app that already knows her dog’s name, asks how Tuesday went, and is still awake at 11 p.m. when nobody else is. That is the companion category: the relationship is the feature. Asking Claude for a grocery list is still a chatbot. It is not this.
What people actually mean when they say this
When someone says “AI companion,” they usually mean a chatbot framed as a friend, crush, or always-on listener — not a customer-service bot, not a work assistant, and not a licensed therapist, even when the chat feels like one. People also use ordinary ChatGPT that way; the word still points at the relationship, not the brand.
