“I saw Sol and Luna and felt behind before I had typed a word.”
GPT-6 Sol and Luna are newer versions, not a skill you missed
OpenAI put GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna beside ChatGPT in September. Sol and Luna already named GPT-5.6 models. They are more affordable models in the same family as Astra, which OpenAI still calls its best. The list looked like a test.
We read OpenAI's September 22 announcement, the October 7 Chat-tab note, the September 29 page, and the June 26 GPT-5.6 preview.
A GPT-6 name on that list is not a skill you missed.
On September 22 they were not in Chat. Paid seats had them in Work and Codex. Free and Go had Luna on the desktop app. On October 7 OpenAI began rolling GPT-6 into the Chat tab: Sol for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, with Luna for Free and Go starting the next day. Enterprise access depends on workplace admin settings. GPT-6.1 Sol is in Work and Codex; its September 29 announcement still says it is not in Chat.
Chat can show those names now. You do not need to sort Sol from Luna to ask for the note telling your sister you are not cooking Thanksgiving. The September price cut is a rate for developers, not a new bill.
This got loud because three names landed in one month, and a product launch treats a new label like news you are supposed to master.
A model list is not a class.
This is the situation as of October 22, 2026. Names in Chat can still move.
If you open ChatGPT to write an email or look something up, you do not need to pick Sol, Luna, or Astra first. If your account still shows an old name, the label alone does not tell you why, and it is not a lesson you failed.
The list can grow; your sentence does not have to.
In conversation:
GPT-6 Sol and Luna are newer versions of names ChatGPT already used, but you don't have to learn which is which to keep using it.
When someone sends you this:
I saw this too, and the updates are real, but we can keep typing what we want without treating the model names as homework.
Questions people ask
Do I need to switch to Sol or Luna myself?
No. OpenAI's October 7 note says the Chat tab is already powered by Sol on paid plans and Luna on Free and Go, so you can keep typing. Picking a name is optional, not the assignment.
What if my Chat still shows the old name?
Then you are not behind. OpenAI announced a rollout starting October 7, and said Enterprise access depends on workplace admin settings. An old label alone does not establish why your account looks different.
