A new California Policy Lab report found a narrower and more unsettling pattern than the usual AI-jobs headline: unemployment claims rose among college-educated workers in occupations with high potential AI exposure.

That does not mean AI is replacing every professional with a laptop and a calendar full of meetings. It means the early layoff data is not pointing only at routine or low-skill work. In this dataset, some of the sharper signals show up among people with bachelor's degrees or higher.
The report combines California unemployment insurance claims with measures of occupational AI exposure. Those exposure measures estimate how much of a job's task mix can be performed or assisted by modern AI. They are a proxy, not proof that a specific person's job was cut because of a specific tool.
The statewide picture is also more boring than the panic version. The researchers found no evidence of a broad statewide surge in unemployment claims from AI-exposed occupations through May 2026. The stronger pattern was concentrated: college-educated workers in high-exposure occupations, workers in the San Francisco Bay Area, and technology-heavy sectors such as information and professional services.
One honest reaction: this is useful precisely because it refuses to be simple. Education still matters. Expertise still matters. But a degree is not a force field. Some professional tasks are unusually legible to software, and software has been reading aggressively lately.
