Vibe Coding
Definition
Building software by describing what you want in plain language and letting an AI write the actual code, going more on the result than on understanding every line. The term was coined in early 2025 and caught on quickly. It's lowered the bar for making simple apps and tools considerably. It also has a catch: when something breaks, you may not understand the code well enough to fix it. Fine for tinkering, riskier for anything important.
Why It Matters
It's opened up programming to people who never wrote a line of code, which is genuinely exciting. Knowing its limits keeps that excitement realistic.
What does that look like in practice?
You tell an AI 'build me a simple page that tracks my daily walks' and use what it makes without reading the code. That's vibe coding.
What people actually mean when they say this
When someone says they 'vibe-coded' an app, they mean they described it and let the AI write the code, trusting the result over the details.
