AI Cover
Definition
An AI cover is a new performance of a real, existing song — made by software, not by a person picking up a guitar. The machine generates a singing voice and an arrangement for a song someone else already wrote. That is not a human cover band, and it is not a fully invented AI track with no original song underneath it. Some services now offer licensed AI covers, where the artist opted in and is supposed to be credited and paid. A clip that clones a singer who never agreed is a different thing, even when the same two words are on the button.
Why It Matters
Headlines and app buttons now say "AI cover" as if it were one product. It isn't. The phrase can mean a licensed remix the artist allowed — or a voice that sounds like your mother on a song she never sang. Knowing which one you're hearing is the whole point.
What does that look like in practice?
Your niece texts a clip: Grandma singing "Go Your Own Way." Grandma never recorded Fleetwood Mac. That is an AI cover of a real song, wearing a voice that sounds like hers. Karaoke night at the Elks Lodge is a human cover. A track an app invented from scratch, with no Fleetwood Mac underneath, is neither. And if a music app later offers an official "AI cover" button, that one is supposed to work only if the artist said yes — which is not what just arrived in the family chat.
What people actually mean when they say this
People use "AI cover" for three different objects: a machine singing an existing song; a clone of a famous (or familiar) voice on any song; and a fully generated fake track with no original work. They also treat a licensed, opt-in app feature — Spotify has announced one, grounded in consent, credit, and compensation, still described as upcoming as of August 2026 — as if it were the same as a viral unlicensed clone. It is not.
